History

The Orphean Singers are celebrating their 22nd year as an established choir this year.  They are very well known not only for the pleasure they give through their music but also for the support they give to local charities as a result of their singing.  Since their formation the choir has made donations of about 75,000 euros.

Charitable Donations List.

The Orphean Singers originally started in 1991 when the Late George McCutcheon would assemble small groups to sing Carols in hotels with the intention to raise money for local charities. In 1992 Bernard Gooderick joined them as their first Conductor. They then adopted the name 'The Orphean Singers' and performed their first concert 'While Shepherds Watched' by Roger Jones in the Church of Ayia Kyriaki in Paphos. There have been a number of Conductors over the years, including Doris Willis, David Lewis and David Asater, each bringing their own abilities and enthusiasm to the choir.  In January 2000 David Asater extended the choir with a performance of 'Faure's Requiem' and during the 10th Anniversary year for the first time he introduced professional soloists for the performances of Vivaldi's Gloria and a Gala Night at the Opera.

Throughout the last few years the choir has improved their standards of performance under the auspices of the Conductor Yiannis Hadjilouizou, B.M., M.M., D.M.A., a talented and internationally renowned Cypriot musician with Nadia Iotova,an outstanding Pianist from Sofia accompanying the choir.

Our aim is to perform a variety of music to suit all tastes, providing a high quality and varied cultural musical experience for all to enjoy, and to raise money for charity.  The reputation and standing of the choir has risen throughout Cyprus, clearly witnessed by the very welcome influx of new members, the ever increasing audience and invitations to perform throughout Cyprus.

In May 2012 Yiannis Hadjilouizou led the Orphean Singers in their first classical performance of the Mozart Requiem at the Annabelle Hotel, Paphos. The choir were joined by a small group of talented musicians, some from the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and four young Cypriot soloists, in a concert that achieved critical acclaim.

What a fantastic Year 2013 was!

In April the choir performed Brahms German Requiem accompanied by two Cypriot Soloists, Elli Aloneftou and Marios Andreou at the Markideion Theatre, Paphos and the Melina Merkouri Theatre, Nicosia.

The showpiece of the year was most definitely the 21st Anniversary Concert, which was held in the Ballroom at the Annabelle Hotel, Paphos. Choir members chose and performed twenty one songs from the twenty one years since the choir began. This included a variety of music from 'Mozart' to 'Simon and Garfunkel' or, as the sub-title of the concert suggested, from Abba to Zadok. Again we were honoured to have two talented Cypriot Soloists, Antonio Koutroupis, Tenor and Kyriakos Sophocleous, Bass Baritone accompanying the choir. The evening was rounded off by a wonderful buffet supper at the Hotel, enjoyed by some members from the audience and choir members.

In December the choir returned to a traditional format for their Christmas concerts, presented at the 'Stage One Theatre' in Emba. The concerts featured a variety of Christmas music pieces, Carols and humorous readings by members of the choir. During the Christmas period we were invited to sing in a variety of venues including hotels, the 'German Christmas Market' on behalf of the Rotary Club in Paphos, the 'Kamares Club' and the 'Virgin Mary Home' in Chloraka.

As a result of our 2013 musical programme we were delighted to have made substantial donations to the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients, the Friends Hospice and Solidarity Paphos.

What a beginning to 2014!

The choir was officially recognised as a group collaborating with Pafos2017Discussions are ongoing with the Pafos2017 City of Culture organisers as exciting plans are being developed to enable the Orphean Singers to be an important part of showcasing Paphos culture in the years leading up to and including 2017.

Easter 2014

As a special tribute to the beginning of Holy Week, Antonio Koutroupis and Kyriakos Sophocleous again joined the choir to perform a classical concert in the Markedeion Theatre, Paphos. The musical content included Puccini's Messa di Gloria, the Easter Hymn and other familiar choruses and arias from operas by Wagner, Verdi and Boito. By kind invitation we were invited to perform a shortened concert programme in the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Nicosia. In June we again performed the shortened programme in the Terra Santa, Roman Catholic Church, Larnaca and were honoured to have Joseph S. Josephides (Base of the Lyric-Operatic Stage of Limassol to open our concert with a piece from the Opera 'The Magic Flute' of W.A. Mozart. 'O Isis Und Osiris'.

Rehearsals continued until the end of June and the choir are now taking a well deserved break for the summer. We will be returning to the Kamaras Club on the 5th September to continue preparing for our next concert for your musical pleasure and enjoyment.
